Aqara Wall Outlet H2 (UK): proper power monitoring in a socket that does not phone home

We get asked a lot which new kit is actually worth fitting, so we are going to start calling out the genuinely useful ones. First up is a device a lot of UK homeowners can use today: the Aqara Wall Outlet H2 UK.

This is a flush double wall outlet, two independent 13A sockets you can switch separately, with a USB-C port built in (one version has a single 20W port, the other has two). The interesting part for a smart home is the radios: it speaks Thread, Zigbee and Bluetooth, so it can fit either a Matter-over-Thread setup or a Zigbee one.

Why it is worth a look

For a Home Assistant home, the Zigbee mode is where this socket gets useful. Pair it to an Aqara Zigbee hub and you unlock the features that make it more than a switch:

• Per-socket energy monitoring. You can see exactly what each outlet is drawing, not just a combined figure. That is the difference between “the wall is using some power” and “the washing machine has finished its cycle”.
• Independent control of both sockets. Schedule or automate each outlet on its own.
• Child lock and a maximum power limit. Handy for safety and for capping what a given socket is allowed to pull.

And because it runs locally over Zigbee, all of that lives on your own Home Assistant system. No vendor cloud account sits between you and your own sockets, which is exactly how we like to build.

Real uses in a UK home

• Put it behind the washing machine or dishwasher and Home Assistant can tell you when a cycle ends, based on the power draw dropping off.

The honest limits

This is not a fit for everyone, and we would rather be straight about it:

• The good stuff needs an Aqara Zigbee hub. Per-socket monitoring, child lock and the power limit are Zigbee-mode features. Over plain Matter-over-Thread you still get solid control, but only combined power monitoring and fewer extras. So this makes most sense if you already run Aqara, or plan to.
• It is a fixed wall outlet, not a plug-in adapter. Swapping a wall socket is electrical work. If you are not comfortable with that, it should be fitted by someone competent.

Our take
