A smart home without the cloud: why local-first beats cloud-locked

Most smart home kit you can buy off the shelf has a hidden dependency: someone else’s server. The bulb, the camera, the doorbell, the thermostat all phone home to a cloud account, and your control of them depends on that company keeping the lights on. We think that is the wrong way to build a home, and here is why.

What “cloud-locked” actually means for you

When a device is cloud-locked, three things are true:

• It stops working when the internet does. Lose your broadband and you can lose your lights, heating control, and cameras with it.
• It can be switched off by someone else. Manufacturers regularly retire products and shut down the servers behind them. When that happens, hardware you paid for becomes a paperweight.
• Your data leaves your house. Camera footage, presence, routines, and habits get processed on servers you do not control, often to sell you a subscription to access your own home.

None of that is a fault you can fix after the fact. It is baked into how the product was designed.

The local-first alternative

We build on Home Assistant, an open platform that runs on a small device in your home rather than in someone else’s data centre. The difference is simple but it changes everything:

• It keeps working offline. Your automations, lights, heating, and cameras run on your own network. A broadband outage does not take your house down with it.
• It is not at the mercy of one company. Home Assistant supports thousands of devices and is not going to be switched off because a single manufacturer changed its business model.
• Your data stays yours. Footage and activity stay on your hardware. Nothing leaves the house unless you choose to let it.

“But I want to control it from my phone when I am out”

You still can. Local-first does not mean cut off. It means the brain of your home lives with you, and remote access is something you add on your terms, securely, rather than the only way the system works. You get the convenience without handing over the keys.

Privacy is not a premium feature

A lot of the industry treats “your data stays private” as an upsell. We treat it as the baseline. Building local-first is not more expensive to run, it has no monthly fee to keep working, and it is more reliable on the days that matter. It is the way a smart home should have been built in the first place.
